GATE (Film)

: a portion of a motion-picture mechanism which positions the film while it remains stationary or passes before the aperture

: a device that responds to a physical stimulus such as light and transmits a resulting impulse

The cinematographer is responsible for all the visual elements of a film. He or she makes every creative choice related to composition, lighting and camera motion - everything an audience can see in a given shot. The Cinematographer determines all aspects of color, depth-of-field, choice of film stock, gate format or camera sensor.
